Work-Life Balance Is a Lie - Here’s What to Do Instead
Nov 14, 2025Real Talk
You’ve done everything right. You’ve managed your time, color-coded your calendar, and still feel stretched too thin. Because the dream of balance is a myth that’s keeping you stuck.
The truth is, balance was never the goal — alignment was. You don’t need a color-coded calendar; you need clarity about what actually matters. I remember believing that if I just tried harder, I could keep all the plates spinning. But what I’ve learned is that the harder you chase balance, the faster it runs away. Balance sounds peaceful, but it’s actually pressure dressed up as perfection.
I was in the car, laptop bag on the passenger seat, trying to finish a business meeting on Bluetooth while inching through traffic to make it to Aubrey’s volleyball game. I could feel dinner ingredients rolling around in the backseat because I still hadn’t prepped anything.
And there I was, nodding through a client conversation, checking the clock every thirty seconds, praying I didn’t miss her first serve, and mentally mapping out what I could toss in the air fryer when we got home.
In that moment, I remember thinking, If this is balance, it’s a joke.
Because nothing felt balanced.
It felt like spinning.
It felt like guilt sitting in the backseat next to the groceries.
That’s when it hit me: the problem wasn’t my schedule.
The problem was the story I was telling myself, that I should be able to hold every part of my life at the exact same height at the exact same time.
What You’ll Unlock
- Why “balance” creates guilt instead of peace
- The mindset shift that changes how you see your career
- How to build integration instead of chasing equilibrium
Simple steps to align your work with your life
This isn’t about adding more to your to-do list. It’s about removing the lies that make you feel like you’re failing when you’re actually evolving. You’ll walk away knowing how to reclaim your time and design a rhythm that fits your real life. You’ll also learn why guilt has nothing to do with productivity — and everything to do with unrealistic expectations. By the end, you’ll see why the most fulfilled professionals don’t chase balance; they create alignment.
The Wake-Up Call
Work-life balance was born in the 70s, when society thought stress could be solved with math. Eight hours work, eight play, eight sleep. But life doesn’t work in equal slices. It’s unpredictable, emotional, and human.
And that’s what makes it beautiful. The goal isn’t symmetry; it’s sustainability. When I was at Target, I tried to live by the rules — do it all, do it perfectly, and smile while doing it. But perfection isn’t peace. The wake-up call came when I realized that every time I said yes to one thing, I was saying no to something that mattered more. The moment I stopped chasing equal hours and started chasing meaningful hours, everything changed.
Behind the Curtain
When I was laid off from Target, my TalentQ business plan was already written. That day taught me something powerful: disruption isn’t failure — it’s direction.
It didn’t feel that way at first. I remember sitting in my car in the Target parking lot, stunned. I’d done everything “right,” and yet, life had other plans. But that moment cracked something open in me — a space where clarity could finally grow. I realized I’d been building someone else’s version of success. The layoff forced me to ask what my version looked like. It was terrifying and freeing all at once.
That moment didn’t just push me out of my comfort zone, it pushed me into my calling. Losing my job at Target cracked the door open, but choosing to start TalentQ kicked it wide open. I didn’t know it at the time, but that decision became the foundation for everything I teach now. I turned the most uncertain moment of my career into the blueprint I now use to guide others through their turning point too.
The Shift
Integration isn’t about doing more, it’s about living aligned. Ask yourself:
- How can my work fuel my personal goals?
- How can my values guide how I show up?
- How can both serve the same mission, yours?
For me, integration looks like walking the St. Croix River trail between coaching calls, that’s where I do my best thinking. It looks like filming a podcast episode at night when inspiration hits, instead of forcing myself into a “9-to-5 creative window.” It’s bringing Aubrey to Power of 100 events so she can see women leading boldly. The shift is subtle but life-changing: when your values lead, time follows. Integration isn’t chaos, it’s clarity in motion.
Make It Real
Define your non-negotiables. What grounds you, family dinners, morning workouts, quiet coffee before work? Those aren’t luxuries; they’re the foundation that fuels every win. I learned that skipping my morning stillness wrecked my focus for the entire day. Protect what gives you energy, not just what earns you results.
Find alignment. When I was laid off from Target, I took the biggest leap of my life and launched TalentQ. It wasn’t the easy choice, but it was the aligned one. Alignment often shows up disguised as disruption. If your current role drains you more than it develops you, it’s time to realign your direction.
Set flexible boundaries. Flexibility is power. I once felt guilty for leaving early to attend Aubrey’s volleyball game until I realized that showing up there gave me the energy to show up better everywhere else. Boundaries aren’t barriers; they’re declarations of value.
Embrace seasons. You’ll have seasons of hustle and seasons of healing. When I shifted from corporate recruiting to coaching full-time, people thought I was stepping back. In reality, I was stepping into my next evolution. Each season brings wisdom if you let it.
Measure what matters. Forget balance sheets and calendars, start measuring joy. I’ve had record months that felt hollow and quiet months that felt expansive. Now, I define success by alignment, not applause.
Your Moment of Clarity
What would your life look like if your work gave you energy instead of draining it?
Pause and actually picture it. How would your mornings feel? How would you show up in meetings or with your family? That’s the kind of clarity that sparks real change not because you quit your job overnight, but because you start living intentionally. For me, that question was the turning point that shifted my career, my confidence, and my peace. Sometimes, all it takes is one honest question to rewrite your future.
